Description:
Over the last two years health care providers have faced many challenges. Our newest concern is the protection of the workforce in a place of patient care that is often not in public view- the patient’s home. More and more home care and hospice workers are expressing the feeling of being unsafe whether it is traveling to a home, leaving their vehicle to gain entrance to the patient home, and in some cases within the patient’s home. Most recently, in Spokane Washington, a home care nurse was shot to death. Community care providers have seen an increase in violent experiences with guns in the home, drugs, racism, public transportation, sexual harassment and sexual assault. In addition, civil unrest and gun violence on the streets have increased dramatically since 2020 when the pandemic first began. OSHA’s General Duty Clause from the OSHA Act of 1970 requires that, in addition to compliance with hazard-specific standards, all employers provide a work environment "free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm." This session will expand upon, and highlight, the role agencies play in developing a safety plan as well as developing education for staff on self protection.
